Recognized nanomaterials
leader sets rigorous industrial standards
for carbon nanotube suppliers
Richardson, Texas (April 28, 2004)
Zyvex today announced the implementation of its Supply
Chain Certification Program for carbon nanotube suppliers.
Zyvex’s comprehensive program verifies quality and batch-to-batch
consistency using SEM, TPO, TGA, and a number of standard
analytical tests.
“Establishing a raw material standard
and maintaining quality assurance to meet that standard is
the key to the commercialization of carbon nanotubes and carbon
nanotube-based materials,” said Zyvex President Thomas
A. Cellucci, PhD, MBA. “We analyzed critical aspects
of nanotube manufacturing processes, and created a method
to validate a reliable, industrial supply chain, both
for our own use, and others. Zyvex believes that these steps
are necessary to quickly move nanotechnology out of the lab
and into the commercial world.”
“The use of carbon nanotubes as industrial
materials has been hampered by several factors,” said
Mark Banash, PhD, MBA, a Senior Engineer at Zyvex and a Six
Sigma Black Belt. “First was the inability to disperse
the nanotubes uniformly in a variety of composite matrices,
which Zyvex has recently solved with our functionalization
technology. Second was a supply chain that provided CNT material
with uncontrolled specifications and impractical delivery
schedules. Our analytical process objectively assesses a given
CNT manufacturer’s underlying technology and production
scalability. It also considers the business structure of the
firm, its ability to raise capital, and its long-term commitment
to the marketplace.”
Zyvex expects to certify major suppliers of
multi-wall and single-wall carbon nanotubes by June 2004.
