State Bar of Texas recognizes inventor’s
achievements
Richardson, Texas (June 29, 2004)
Zyvex Corporation today announced that Dr. George
D. Skidmore, Director of Research, has been awarded the “Inventor
of the Year Award” by the State Bar of Texas. Each year
the Intellectual Property Section of the State Bar of Texas
selects an Inventor of the Year based on the contributions
of an inventor and the impact of their inventions to society
and the Texas economy.
Dr. Skidmore’s inventions, including seven
patents issued to date, are fundamental to new approaches
to high-precision, automated assembly manufacturing. In particular,
his inventions related to parallel assembly systems, tethering
methods to constrain released parts, microgrippers to capture
parts, and self-centering methods of connecting parts, are
key to realizing low-cost downsizing of parts, effecting a
new paradigm in manufacturing.
Not only an inventor, but also a technical visionary
and leader, Dr. Skidmore is the Principle Investigator of
Zyvex’s $25 Million, five-year NIST-Advanced Technology
Program. Although this program is only at its mid-point, the
program has already generated revenues from several products
and an industrial research contract, and has attracted additional
funding from DARPA to develop a miniature (less than 1 cm)
scanning electron microscope.
“The millions of dollars in revenue, the
over fifteen jobs created, and multiple sub-contracts to Texas
universities will be considered minuscule compared to the
impact that will be realized when this technology carries
us into a new revolution of micro-miniaturization,”
stated the award citation.
“I am fortunate to lead a team of many
fine R&D Scientists and engineers,” said Dr. Skidmore.
“They have all contributed significantly to the development
of these technologies.”
During his tenure at Zyvex, Dr. Skidmore has
helped transform the company from a small research center
to one of the largest and most prestigious global nanotechnology
companies in the United States.
Following in the tradition of other recipients
of the award, such as Dr. Jack Kilby and others in the microelectronics
industry, Dr. Skidmore’s inventions and contributions
to micro- and nanoassembly will continue to advance micro-
and nanoelectronics technology.
